Since 2006, Bernice volunteered for NAAAP Toronto in various capacities – first as Director of Marketing, then as VP of Special Projects. During her tenure with NAAAP Toronto, she led a team to host two promotional shows that attracted media stories for “Little Asia”, and NAAAP eventually claimed first place in 2006 and 2007. She also led initiatives to better understand NAAAP Toronto’s membership base, developed acquisition strategies and differentiated programs for its members. In her role as VP Special Projects, she will lead her team to act as “internal consultants” and work on strategic projects that enable NAAAP Toronto to achieve its long-term goals.

For one year starting April 2010, she will be studying towards her MBA at Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario. This education will top off her six years of experience in the financial industry – in New Product Development and Portfolio Management roles at American Express Canada, then as Senior Product Manager, Unsecured Lending at CIBC. In both companies, her role as product owner (credit cards at Amex, unsecured lines and loans at CIBC) allowed her to learn the relevant business metrics, and the fine balance between growth and risks. She built business cases and implemented strategies in acquisition and account management to stimulate profitable growth while managing default risks. Upon graduation from Ivey’s MBA program, Bernice plans to pursue a career in management consulting.

In addition to volunteering for NAAAP Toronto, she actively promotes diversity in the workplace. While at Amex, she was on the Diversity Council and launched initiatives to facilitate diverse employee needs such as telecommuting and back-up childcare. While at CIBC, she was the Career Development Chair in the CIBC Asian Employee Network (CAEN). She ran several new programs to support personal and career growth such as a career advancement workshop series, a business etiquette dinner, and peer-sharing forums.

Bernice’s passion in leading teams to promote diversity and professional development actually began back in university. In 2002, she founded the McMaster Chinese Commerce Association – a 150-member academic club that offered career workshops, diversity celebrations, and seminars regarding culture-related topics for its members. A particular highlight was MCCA’s participation in McMaster’s famous Pangea celebration, a day of multicultural displays and performances to educate and facilitate appreciation of diversity.

In her spare time, Bernice enjoys yoga, skiing, photography, and most of all, traveling. Still to be crossed off from her list – rural SW China to visit her sponsored child, Egypt, Tibet, Cambodia and Peru!!
